Are the stars finally aligning for the architecture industry or is the gloss coming off Labour's win?

After years of confronting significant headwinds, Labour's election win felt like a new dawn and optimism swept through the industry. Interest rates were also finally cut and everything appeared to be going in the right direction. When speaking to our clients at the beginning of the summer, most were getting busier and expecting a recruitment drive in the Autumn. As the leaves start to drop, sadly some of the realities of UK architecture have not changed and projects are still stuck in planning, fees are incredibly low and many schemes are not financially viable on higher borrowing rates.

It is a very mixed picture, however. Although the latest RIBA Future Trends Survey Results below are subdued, figures from the S&P Global UK Construction PMI were far more robust. The results for August even commented on construction activity increasing at its fastest pace in 26 months.

Architectural Jobs Market

From a recruitment point of view, we are starting to see a pick up in new opportunities but probably not above the norm for this time of year which is historically a very busy period. Having relied on the high-end residential market for the last few years, encouragingly our current roles are spread across a far greater variety of sectors including small-scale private residential, healthcare projects, luxury high-end interiors, commercial, transport and a number of large-scale international schemes. If you have a particular sector you are aspiring to work in, we are likely to have some interesting options for you.

We are also seeing an increase in good candidates who feel they've hit a glass ceiling within their current firm and looking for somewhere new to progress their careers. These are predominantly architects to senior architects seeking associate roles or a move client side. The greatest mismatch, however, is between the number of recent Part 2s looking for jobs and the limited number of positions available. If you are struggling to find the right staff, do please take a look at our employers page to see how we can help.
