A Mixed Picture Emerges as Market Optimism Faces Summer Slowdown

After a particularly active spring, the architectural job market is beginning to show a few signs of easing as we move into the summer months. While overall sentiment remains positive, the pace seen earlier in the year was always unlikely to sustain itself indefinitely—especially in the face of new challenges.

RIBA Future Trends – Still Positive, But Caution Returns

According to the RIBA Future Trends Report (May 2025), confidence across the profession remains higher than it has been in over a year. The Future Workload Index rose to +11, with all sectors and regions reporting expectations of growth. In particular:

  • Private housing leads sector optimism with a balance of +16
  • The public sector moved into positive territory for the first time in three years
  • Medium and large practices (11+ staff) continue to drive hiring plans, with a +23 Staffing Index

However, the last few weeks have told a more nuanced story. Following a very busy spring, activity has cooled somewhat, as expected. Seasonal slowdown aside, several new headwinds are having a tangible impact:

  • The increase in Employer National Insurance has added pressure to already stretched practice budgets
  • Delays in project timelines, particularly in the public and commercial sectors, have contributed to redundancies at some larger firms
  • Smaller practices remain cautious, with nearly a quarter expecting workloads to decline despite the positive national average

So while the market remains fundamentally optimistic, it’s clear we’ve entered a more mixed and transitional phase.
